Clash of the Heroes

Your chance to participate in a battle of COMIC proportions!

Who:
The contest is open to all students enrolled in the summer Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) educational programs.

What:
The contest centers around creation of a special edition of the comic book, A.R. Chronicles. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creative talents in an exercise involving core aspects of literacy, including reading, speaking, and writing.

When:
The contest will run from June 4th – August 6th, 2018. There are four chances to Vote on your favorites over the next 10 weeks.

Conflict & Resolution Story

Vote August 1st, 1PM EST - August 4th, 1PM EST — Winner Announced August 6th
Theme/Academic Connection: Creative Writing & Conflict Resolution

For the final stage of the contest, students built upon the previous stages to create a conflict and subsequent resolution for A’Storya. A primary skill to be employed and emphasized with this task is creative writing and conflict resolution. Students were asked to write about a conflict in effective and creative ways, and introduce a reasonable resolution to the conflict.

Backstory & Introduction of Superhero

Theme/Academic Connection: Creative Writing

For this stage of the contest, students built upon the previous stage to create a backstory and introduction for, A’Storya, the winning superhero from DJJ's PACE-Hillsborough program (see below). A primary skill to be employed and emphasized with this task is creative writing. Students were asked to use their imagination to write a narrative to the superhero’s backstory using effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Character Design

Theme/Academic Connection: Creativity & Graphic Design

For this stage of the contest, students created a superhero character for inclusion in a future edition of A.R. Chronicles. A primary skill employed and emphasized with this task is creativity. Students were asked to develop their characters with some guiding questions in mind, such as, name, origin, powers, and appearance.

Reading of A.R. Chronicles

Theme/Academic Connection: Prosody

For this stage of the contest, students created an audio file recording of the first issue of A.R. Chronicles. A primary skill employed and emphasized with this task is prosody, the patterns of stress and intonation in a language. Students were encouraged to demonstrate tone, stress, and rhythm to produce a fluid, original reading of the comic.
